- 57% of Brits have never replaced their dining table
The furniture in our homes, from our dining tables to our wardrobes and chairs, is more than just functional, it reflects how we care for our living spaces. However, a new survey by Barker and Stonehouse reveals that nearly a third of Brits (29%) wait until furniture is damaged before replacing it, and shockingly, many Brits admit to having never replaced heavily used items of furniture in their homes.
Lack of upkeep not only shortens the lifespan of our furnishings but can also have serious implications on our health, with 35% of Brits admitting that they have never replaced their mattress, it’s clear we’re neglecting our homes and our wellbeing.
The research highlights the most overlooked household items and how this can be affecting our day to day lives – so to help homeowners protect their furniture and create a stress-free, harmonious home, Lena Gierasinska, Head of Product and Displays, shares her expert tips on furniture care and maintenance.
When do people update their furniture?
Almost a third (29%) of respondents admitted they only replace furniture once it shows signs of damage or reaches the end of its life, often waiting until it’s on the brink of breaking.
Proactive furniture care and understanding signs of damage can save homeowners sticky situations if pieces break unexpectedly – nobody wants a chair collapsing during a dinner party with friends or family!
Meanwhile, 15% of people cited discomfort as their main reason for updating their furniture, underlining how poorly designed or worn-out pieces can disrupt the harmony of a room and even impact physical health. Despite this, over a third (35%) of Brits admit to having never replaced their mattress, with a further 69% having never replaced their office chair.
Lena explains: “It is important to be mindful of our posture when sitting. However, the correct chair, seat or sofa is vital to support our backs and necks, whether that be whilst we work from home at a desk, at the dinner table, or sat watching TV. Ensure that seating has a strong and supportive back and incorporate cushions for adjustable support if needed.”
Style and size also influence furniture updates, though to a lesser extent. 13% percent of respondents said they had replaced furniture because they disliked its style, emphasising the importance of timeless design over fleeting trends. Additionally, 8% replaced furniture that was either too big or too small for their space.
Our most neglected furniture
- Mattresses
A good mattress is essential for a restful night’s sleep, and 35% of people have never replaced theirs. Over time, mattresses lose their support, comfort, and hygiene, leading to disrupted sleep and potential back pain.
On average, a mattress should be replaced every 7 to 10 years, although this can vary depending on the type, quality, and how well it’s cared for. Factors such as the weight and sleep habits of the person using the mattress also play a role.
Lena says: “An old or poorly maintained mattress can seriously affect your sleep quality and health. As a mattress ages, it loses its ability to support your body properly, which can lead to discomfort, back and neck pain, and poor sleep. If you wake up feeling unrested or experience pain, it may be time to replace your mattress.
“To maintain your existing mattress, it’s essential to rotate it every three to six months to ensure even wear, particularly if it’s memory foam or innerspring.
“Using a mattress protector can help prevent stains, dust mites, and allergens from settling into the fabric and regularly vacuuming your mattress will remove dirt and debris. It’s also a good idea to air it out every few months as this will prevent moisture buildup. Make sure to keep your mattress on a supportive bed frame which can help avoid sagging and ensure long-lasting comfort.”
- Garden Furniture
Garden furniture plays a vital role in creating inviting outdoor spaces where we can relax, entertain, and enjoy the fresh air. However, just under two-thirds (61%) of Brits have never replaced their garden furniture.
Storing furniture in a dry space during winter, cleaning it regularly, and using protective covers can ensure it remains a functional part of your outdoor space for years.
Lena says: “Garden furniture is constantly exposed to the elements, which can cause significant wear and tear if not properly maintained. Rain, wind, sun, and temperature fluctuations all take their toll on materials, leading to deterioration over time.
“Wooden furniture is particularly susceptible to moisture, which can cause rot, warping, or splitting, while metal pieces are at risk of rust and corrosion if they aren’t protected. Even synthetic materials like plastic or rattan can fade, crack, or become brittle when exposed to prolonged sunlight.
“For wooden furniture, consider applying a weatherproof sealant to preserve its durability, while metal items may benefit from a protective coating to prevent corrosion.
“Knowing when to replace your garden furniture is crucial to maintaining a safe and comfortable outdoor space. Signs that it’s time to invest in a new set include visible rot or soft spots in wooden furniture, which indicates water damage and weakened structural integrity. For metal furniture, any sign of rust, especially if it has penetrated the surface, can lead to instability and further deterioration.”
- Dining tables
A dining table is more than just a piece of furniture, it’s the centrepiece of family meals, celebrations, and everyday moments. However, the survey reveals that 57% of people have never replaced their dining table.
The lifespan of your dining table depends on its condition, quality, and how it’s used. A well-made dining table can last 10 to 20 years or more with proper care.
Lena says: “Your dining table is one of the most hardworking pieces of furniture in your home, and with the right care, it can last for decades. To keep it in top condition, always use coasters and placemats to protect the surface from heat, spills, and scratches.
“Regularly clean your table with a soft, damp cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals that can damage finishes, and consider applying a protective wax or polish if suitable for the material.
“However, even with proper care, certain habits can lead to wear and tear over time. Dragging heavy items across the table, placing hot pans directly on the surface, or allowing moisture to pool can cause long-term damage.
“Warning signs to watch for include deep scratches, fading or discoloration of the finish, and any wobbling or instability in the legs or joints. These can indicate larger structural issues that may require professional repairs or, in some cases, replacement. By being mindful of how you use your dining table and addressing small issues promptly, you can preserve its beauty and functionality for years to come.”
- Office chairs
The survey reveals that 69% of people have never replaced their office chair, highlighting a widespread reliance on aging furniture.
On average, a good-quality office chair should last between 7 to 10 years with regular use. However, there are several signs that it might be time to replace your chair sooner.
Lena says: “An office chair is one of the most important pieces of furniture for maintaining your comfort and wellbeing, especially if you spend long hours sitting. Over time, however, even the best chairs can wear out and lose their effectiveness. Signs that it might be time to replace your office chair include flattened seat cushions, difficulty adjusting the height or tilt, or any wobbling or instability in the base.
“Using an old or poorly functioning office chair can have a significant impact on your posture. Without proper support, you may find yourself slouching, which can lead to back, neck, and shoulder pain over time.
“An ergonomic chair with adequate lumbar support, adjustable settings, and good cushioning helps keep your spine aligned and reduces strain on your muscles, improving both comfort and productivity. If your current chair isn’t meeting these standards, it’s worth considering an upgrade to protect your posture and overall health.”
