Mary Steenburgen is joining “A Man on the Inside” Season 2 at Netflix, Variety has learned.
The casting is a family affair for Steenburgen, who will appear opposite her real life husband and series lead Ted Danson. Per the official logline, the show follows Charles (Danson), “a retired man who gets a new lease on life when he answers an ad from a PI and becomes a mole in a secret investigation.”
Steenburgen will play Mona Margadoff, described as “a former musician who factors heavily in the case Charles is trying to solve.” Season 2 is slated to begin production in April.
Steenburgen won both the Academy Award and Golden Globe for best supporting actress for the film “Melvin and Howard.” She was also nominated for the latter award for the films “Going South” and “Ragtime.” She has also starred in films like “Time After Time,” “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” “Philadelphia,” and “Nightmare Alley.” In television, she has recently appeared in shows like “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” “Grace and Frankie,” and “On Becoming a God in Central Florida.”
She is repped by UTA, Entertainment 360, and Gang Tyre.
This is now the second time in as many months that a husband and wife have been cast alongside each other in the second season of a Netflix comedy series. Previously, Variety exclusively reported that Leighton Meester will appear in Season 2 of “Nobody Wants This,” which stars her husband, Adam Brody. Steenburgen and Danson have also worked together several times in the past, including on “Mr. Mayor,” “The Good Place,” “Pontiac Moon,” and “Gulliver’s Travels.”
“A Man on the Inside” Season 1 debuted in November 2024 to a glowing reception from both audiences and critics. The single-cam comedy remained in the Netflix Top 10 English TV chart for five weeks, while Danson received both Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations for his work in the series. Netflix announced the Season 2 renewal less than a month after it premiered.
The series is based on the documentary “The Mole Agent.” Mike Schur created the series and serves as an executive producer via Fremulon. Morgan Sackett is also an executive producer along with David Miner of 3 Arts Entertainment, Maite Alberdi and Marcela Santibañez of Micromundo Producciones, and Julie Goldman and Christopher Clements of Motto Pictures. Universal Television is the studio.
