“If you wear fresh tan to sleep and wake up in a bed full of stains, there really is no need to panic. There are plenty of effective ways to tackle the stubborn stains, but acting quick will give you the best chance of bringing your sheets back to life.
“When you go to remove the stain, remember to gently dab rather than scrubbing at your sheets, as this can cause the stain to seep deeper into the material and even through to your mattress. There are lots of inexpensive solutions for removing the pesky stains, including using white vinegar and baking soda.”
Here are Winstons Beds tips for banishing fake tan stains
- Baking soda
Try mixing together equal parts of baking soda and water to create a paste. Apply this to the stain for 15 minutes before putting it in the wash and the stain should come out. When you go to remove the stain, remember to gently dab rather than scrubbing at your sheets, as this can cause the stain to seep deeper into the material and even through to your mattress.
- Milk
Lactic acid in milk can actually help to break down fake tan stains. Before washing, soak your sheets in milk for at least an hour. Then wash as normal and you should have stain-free sheets.
- Vinegar
White vinegar breaks down the fake tan to remove the stain. Create a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar and gently dab onto the stained area. The vinegar also neutralises odours, so is a great way to freshen up fake-tan sheets.
- Spot cleaning
If you have a small stain and are just wanting to spot clean your sheets, make sure to use cold water. This is because warm water can actually set the stain deeper into the fabric.
- Use a mattress protector
Mattress protectors provide a barrier between you and your mattress, meaning they effectively help prevent stains. They shield your mattress from any spills, sweat or staining that can occur from wearing fresh tan while in bed. If any staining does go through to your mattress protector, you can easily clean them by sticking them in the washing machine.
