Kevin Bacon has one request for DJs when he’s attending a wedding — don’t play “Footloose.“
On this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the actor revealed why he’d rather not hear Footloose‘s titular song when he goes to weddings.
“I don’t like it when they play ‘Footloose,’ and I’m gonna tell you why,” Bacon told Drew Barrymore, before adding, “The star at the wedding is the bride and the groom.”
According to Bacon — who played Ren McCormack in the 1984 flick — something unusual tends to happen when the DJ plays “Footloose.”
“If you go to a wedding, it always starts — this has [happened] so many times — it starts out cool and then the drinking starts and about 10 o’clock, the DJ plays that song, people kind of form a circle around me and start clapping like I’m a trained monkey and expect me to do a thing,” he explained.
“My feeling is I’m not the focus here. It’s gotta be about those two people,” Bacon added. “That’s why I tend to not want to hear it at a wedding.”
Bacon, however, did acknowledge how the movie made him a star.
“It sounds sort of obnoxious because the movie was so great for me and we play ‘Footloose’ in a band and I’ve played this song a million times,” he said.
Just last year, the actor returned to the high school where Footloose was filmed on the day of their prom. Bacon’s visit came after the students of Payson High School in Utah organized the #BaconToPayson campaign, in which they recreated scenes from Footloose around the school in hopes of catching Bacon’s attention and getting him to attend their final prom before the school relocated at the end of the year.
Bacon surprised the students with the announcement of his return to their school in a March 2024 Today Show broadcast.
“I’ve been so impressed with everything that’s been going on there with this crazy idea to get me to come back,” Bacon said at the time. “I don’t need to say it, but the movie and Payson High School was a big part of my life and I’ve been amazed by all the work that you guys have been putting into this with the musical and the flash mobs and the recreations, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed by me.”
“I’m gonna come. I’ve gotta come!” he exclaimed. “Thank you guys. Let’s dance!”
