It started as a meme – but it’s now a relationship red flag.
A bizarre online debate has taken over TikTok, Reddit and X: Would 100 unarmed men be able to beat a single gorilla in a fight?
But now it’s evolved – with thousands of men saying they’d rather their girlfriend be taken by a gorilla than face the fight.
Speaking to USDT Casino, relationship expert Anne Sofie Koktved warns this isn’t just an internet joke – it’s exposing deeper issues in how some men view love, loyalty, and control.
“It may sound ridiculous, but the ‘100 men vs 1 gorilla’ trend has gone viral because it taps into something very real,” says Anne Sofie.
“When men start saying ‘take the girl, I’m not fighting’, it’s not about the gorilla. It’s about avoiding emotional risk. Many use humour or hyperbole to mask detachment – but what it’s really showing is fear of commitment and a belief that relationships are doomed from the start.”
Where did it start?
The original debate began on Reddit in 2020 and exploded again in April 2025 after an X (formerly Twitter) user reignited the question: “Could 100 men beat a gorilla?”
Soon, the debate turned bizarre – with videos, polls, and AI simulations exploring everything from fight tactics to emotional breakdowns.
But here’s the problem, says Anne Sofie:
“Men choosing the gorilla aren’t just avoiding a hypothetical fight. They’re showing signs of:
- Fear of vulnerability
- Cynicism about relationships
- Treating love as something inevitable to lose, rather than nurture.”
According to Anne Sofie, the real red flags include:
- Saying they’d “never fight for a relationship”
- Talking about women as ‘belongings’ or ‘losses’
- Shrugging off emotional accountability with memes
- Making apathy look like strength
“This meme is a perfect storm of internet humour and emotional avoidance,” she adds.
“But if your partner is laughing a little too hard at the idea of not lifting a finger for you – that’s worth thinking about.”
